Sandra Bullock carries Meriebabie - Get OUT!

My friend Marika and I catered an event in Manhattan Beach a few weeks ago and it was a blast.  Above are some peeks at the evening!  The menu was; curried chicken skewers with spicy peanut dipping sauce, artichoke, pesto, mushroom and leek crostini, caprese lollipops, baked brie with raspberries, spiced nuts & rosemary white bean dip with whole wheat pita chips.  Dessert was more outrageousness; espresso brownies and magic bars with BACON.  Yes ma'am.

Even more gorgeous were the bags and jewels made by my lovely and talented friends, Meredith, Alex and Zoya.  Arent's they brillz?

It was lots of chardonnay swilling, laughing and carrying on until way past this mama's bedtime.  I was so energized by the evening I had to go home and have MORE wine to chill out.  I love catering.  Something about the anxiety of perhaps not having everything ready exactly on time or not having enough food or other disasters gives me a rush.  Strange but true.

Sunday Funday: Sion's

Monday, April 11, 2011

There are some Sundays when only Sion's will do.  It used to be our go-to hangover breakfast spot, and now we just get there when we wake up (or rather, Dax wakes up) early enough for us to get our s together and get out the door.  I dream about a dish they have there.  Its called Ahogados, and its like a breakfast soup.  Its amazing.  Its 2 poached eggs in the most flavorful broth you've ever had with all kinds of other goodies; sliced avocado, fresh cilantro, a dollop of sour cream, rice, peas, and what look like carmelized or even charred onions.  You can get it with chicken too.  This morning I got crazy and got the Motulenos.  A fried egg with a delicious sauce I can't describe, fried plantains, a chicken tacquito, rice, beans, guac, the works.  It really gets you going. Silas got the Sonora; scrambled bacon, peppers, onion, tomato, cheese. Add coffee and chips and salsa at 7am and you're WINNING.

Saturday Night In

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Saturday nights have been cozy around here.  Baby is now sleeping through the night, and he goes to bed at 7, so 7pm is adult beverage and dinner time.  This particular Saturday night I made zucchini carpaccio, light fresh and delish.  A nice alternative to our typical tossed salad.  We had our standard cheese platter and gooey and sticky wings from here. We laid it all out on the coffee table and sat on the floor.  It was super fun!

Then, the cocktails. Oh the cocktails.  I was in a mixology mood so I was in my test kitchen, shaking up the libations and then takinga few sips and handing them to my husband.  (I have a baby, I can't drink ALL those cocktails).

I made a skinny girl margarita with my new favorite Hibiscus Tequila; Centenario Roseangel.  It will be my new summer drink for sure.  I add a splash of soda to mine. I made a basil gimlet inspired by the recipe at The Hungry Cat and a Pimms cup.  The Pimms cup I kind of experimented with my own "homemade" lemon/lime soda instead of 7up.  I was so proud I texted it to my cousin in England.  I'm not sure if she gets texts but I'll tell her all about it this summer.

xoxo...

This is Friday Night

This is how we usually like to begin our Friday nights.  See the trend?  Wine 'n cheese.  That's right.

Food Truck Wednesdays

Thursday, April 7, 2011

There's a food truck that stops in front of the Sketcher's headquarters on Sepulveda in Manhattan Beach every wednesday.  I met a friend there when the Manila Sunrise truck was making its rounds.  Delicious Filipino fare.  I had the special with 2 lumpia fried super deep, and 2 sliders.  Pork and beef.  It was a delicious little break in the day and a fun food adventure.  I can't wait until next Wednesday.

Waterloo & City x2

Monday, April 4, 2011

So I went to Waterloo and City restaurant in Culver City for my girls only birthday dinner and then I went again, 3 days later, on my actual birthday.  I know, I'm pretty crazy.  The first night I had scallops, hamachi, short rib pizza with arugula and stilton, thai mussels and fries.  We washed it all down with some David Byron Pinot.  The 2nd time we had a selection of cheeses, charcuterie with wild boar pate, garlic soup, salad au lardons, and shared a chicken pot pie.  I started off with an amazing cocktail.  It was bourbon, bitters and a honey liquor.  It was delish.  I can't wait to go back.
